50 Greatest Ever Stories In Gaming

1. Silent Hill 2

Jamessh2 James Sunderland receives a letter from his wife asking him to meet her in their special place in Silent Hill. There's only one thing that doesn't add up here; his wife died of a disease 3 months ago. This voyage results in meeting a number of characters from a mentally disturbed woman, a slutty and nearly identical version of Jame's wife, a little girl, a psychotic compulsive murderer, and a mythical executioner known as Pyramid Head. The big twist that James actually killed his wife Mary and repressed the memory is shocking and all but it's the subtle and brilliant symbolism surrounding the plot that puts everything into perspective. James is a chauvinistic pig and ends up being a character to despise. Sure, some people mistakenly believe it was just a mercy kill but the character of Maria, sluttiness and all among various symbolic enemy designs expose James' true persona. He only sees women as objects and decided to murder his wife after a disease ruined her. Pyramid Head repeatedly kills Maria throughout the game as an amnesiac James struggles to come to acceptance and acknowledgement for his sins. Furthermore, that infamous scene where the triangular metal headed demon is seen raping the mannequins that have legs on top and bottom is another puzzle piece to what James is really about (not rape per se, but specifically sex). Pyramid Head represents who James really is. Angela, while mentally unstable and a victim of fatherly child molestation sees through his charade at every turn. Eddie may be a murderer, but he and James are one and the same. Laura is essentially the antithesis to Maria, something pure and innocent to fight for. Silent Hill 2 is meticulously crafted and rich in deep symbolism but in simpler terms, it's a horrifyingly brilliant tale of sex and murder. I sincerely doubt any video game will top it.
