More than any other entertainment medium, video games often tell some of the most hyper-detailed and labyrinthine stories of them all. As an average runtime tends to be north of 20 hours, that can be a ludicrous amount of script work, all cross-referenced to (hopefully) avoid inconsistencies, plot holes or bugbears for the audience.

Naturally, over time we nerds continue to pull at the threads any particularly enjoyable narrative tapestry, resulting in theories, alternate takes and a whole bunch of things you missed first time through. But what when the creators want to add a few things to their respective worlds, characters or motivations?

Spin-offs and prequels seldom turn out as demonstrably better than their originals, and in gaming terms, that often means delving into a lesser-formed version of a given protagonist or motivation. In short, a developer really needs to stick the landing when re-exploring aspects of fiction the fans hold near and dear, because after all, there's a reason they're being granted the cash to do so - consumers responded positively to what went well in the first place.
