7 Amazing New Video Games For The Medieval Swordsman In All Of Us

6. Below

In newest console war, Sony has shifted substantial "indie" scene mindshare away from Microsoft, but the Xbox One has a whole generation to earn its cred back. It is here, in Below's procedurally generated dungeons, where they might have a fighting chance. All at once, Below's aesthetic is deeply melancholic and also achingly beautiful from its godlike, expansive 3rd-person viewpoint and those tiny sword swinging animations look eerily beautiful from so far away. Taking top-down inspiration from gaming classics like Zelda, Below's gameplay loops are more akin to Dark Souls, although it utilizes mortal danger as less of a punishment and more of a learning tool and active mechanic. Death is permanent for every little hero you play as, but their bodies will stay behind, so, granted you're able to find the corpse, your next character can always loot that favorite weapon back. Unless it's a miniature bow or torch, we're guessing that weapon is a sword. Combat seems fairly simplistic overall, but the prospect of randomly generated landscapes, enemies and loot will surely add depth to the experience.

Real Science Magazine called James' addiction to video games "sexually attractive." He also worked really hard and got really lucky in college and earned some awards for acting, improv and stand-up, but nobody cares about that out here in LA. So... He's starting over fresh, performing when He can. His profile picture features James as Serbian, vampire comic Dorde Mehailo with His anonymous Brother and Uncle at the Nerdmelt Showroom in West Hollywood. In James' spare time, he engages in acting, writing, athletics, hydration, hours of great pondering and generally wishing you'd like him.
