5. Sandtrap (Halo 3)
The sheer scope of Sandtrap makes it an automatic choice. Not alone does it offer a huge playground on top and hidden tunnels underneath, it also houses every vehicle in Halo 3, including the gigantic Elephant. The map itself was clearly designed for huge vehicular battles but because of the varied passage ways, it was difficult to completely control the game, as enemies could pop up from anywhere to hijack you. It was one of the most fun maps in Halo 3 too, with excellent spawning and incredible balance mixed with all out carnage. Halo as Halo should be.

4. Lockout (Halo 2)
Lockout was the most played map on Xbox Live so picking it in third place might evoke the rage of fans everywhere. I know it's the quintessential small map of the series but when discussing the best ever, I just feel it gets too much praise. The map itself looked incredible, with distinct areas that became instantly recognizable and varied paths to suit every play style. The tunnel underneath meant flanking was an option for rushers, while long range specialists could completely decimate the opposition with the Sniper rifle. The map was so simple in design and that's why it worked. Everything was laid out and perfectly balanced. Halo 3's Guardian was heavily influenced by Lockout and while it was basically the same map, the original still has the edge. A true masterpiece from Bungie.
