Some games are censored for violence. Others for gore. Others for sex. Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh was censored for all of them. Sexuality plays a major part of the game’s plot, and multiple scenes include bare breasts, bondage, sadomasochism, public sex and offscreen oral sex. Various death scenes include disembowelment and exsanguination. It also included two uses of the word ‘’f**k’’ which was pretty extreme for a game that arrived on shelves in 1996.

Due to the extreme levels of sex and violence, the game was banned in multiple countries, although was eventually un-banned in some after undergoing heavy censorship. Despite gratuitous violence, gore and sex, A Puzzle of Flesh has since come to be viewed as an unlikely champion of homosexual of bisexaul relationships in gaming.

Curtis’ best friend Trevor is openly gay, and it’s later revealed that Curtis harbours some feelings for Trevor as well. Whereas most games of the time portrayed homosexuals as over-the-top stereotypes, A Puzzle of Flesh was applauded by some reviews for its earnest portrayal of sexuality and homosexual characters.
