7 Most Complicated Video Game Stories Absolutely Nobody Understands
3. Final Fantasy VIII
Any of the Final Fantasy games could have a spot on this list. There’s Final Fantasy X with its non-existent main character; Final Fantasy VII with its constant political talk and story inconsistencies; and Final Fantasy IV with its dead characters that come back to life.
But Final Fantasy VIII specifically stands out. The story in the game from the very beginning becomes confusing and nearly impossible to follow, with a constant back and forth between the political unrest of the world and main character Squall’s personal life - something that makes the story hard to follow.
Things get more confusing once you beat disc one, which is when the rest of the game starts contradicting itself. Characters like Rinoa who previously showed no romantic interest in Squall is now suddenly in love with him; the baffling reveal that all the main characters actually knew each other way in the past when they were kids; and the war that takes place in the world at large coming out of nowhere.
All of this culminates in a finale with random visuals and trippy imagery which seems like something out of an experimental indie film. Only for everything to go back to normal afterwards with no explanation in a credit sequence that explains absolutely nothing.
While other games in the series are hard to follow, Final Fantasy VIII earns its spot on this list for not even trying to make sense.
