7 Upcoming Video Games That Could Cause Major Controversies
3. Far Cry 5 Offends Conservative Americans
This one already looks like it will absolutely happen, considering the backlash against Far Cry 5 has already begun.
Many took issue with the fact that the villains (i.e. the people being killed) in Far Cry 5 are white, rural, and religious. Never mind the fact that the main character is a police officer or that the villainous cult in question doesn't actually look like it has much to do with Christianity (as well as one of the hero's main allies being a Christian preacher), the big issue is Ubisoft's alleged "catering to politically correct culture" and "supporting white genocide."
The comments come off as ridiculous.
In past Far Cry games, players have been tasked with murdering their way through Africa, the Pacific Islands, and a fictional South Asian country, with nary a peep of controversy. With Far Cry 5 set in a fictional county in Montana, a vocal portion of the internet has already become up in arms about Far Cry 5 supposedly demonizing conservative Americans.
Ubisoft has already responded, stating that they are downplaying any connections to current events. So don't expect Donald Trump to be name-dropped at any point, especially as the game has already been in development for years.
Far Cry 5's release date is currently listed for February 27, 2018. Time will tell if this controversy will die out or still be maintained by then.
