7 Upcoming Video Games That Could Cause Major Controversies
1. Detroit: Become Human Problematically Portrays Police Violence
If RDR 2 sets the news media on fire, then Detroit: Become Human could drop a nuclear bomb on it.
At it's core, Quantic Dream's newest game is about whether androids developed by humans have a right to live freely or be subjugated under the law.
One the three main characters is a white police officer named Connor, who, despite being an android himself, is tasked with hunting down and capturing rogue androids. Another playable character is a black android that is essentially leading a resistance movement, freeing other androids from captivity and causing general anarchy in the process.
Because of the heavily choice-based gameplay heavily used in Quantic Dream's games, picking a side between Connor and Markus is almost a certainty.
With America currently facing an unending sequence of altercations between white police officers and black civilians, anything less than the most nuanced and sensitive writing is going to cause a major backlash from both pro-police and pro-Black Lives Matter groups. With Beyond Human being written by David Cage, the man that brought us both Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, it is currently extremely uncertain whether he can bring the writing necessary to avoid controversy.
Considering that even the beloved Heavy Rain received criticism for its portrayal of women, however, it's probably best to start preparing for the worst immediately.
