7 Video Games That Survived Development Hell (And How)
2. Too Human
Announced by developer Silicon Knights in 1999 as a game for the original PlayStation, Too Human released as an Xbox 360 exclusive in 2008 after a partnership with Nintendo in the early 2000s.
Wait... what?
After its announcement in 1999, development halted when Nintendo announced an exclusive partnership with Silicon Knights. The game was shifted over to the big N’s GameCube in 2000 where news of the title went silent as the developers were moved onto two other releases – Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.
It was 2005 before the name Too Human was heard again. Shortly after announcing a partnership with Microsoft (Silicon Knights sure get around), Too Human was unveiled once again, this time as a trilogy of Xbox 360 exclusives. The first of which was to be released in time for the holidays in 2006.
It didn’t.
Engine issues (Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack publicly lambasted Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 and sued the creators for it supposedly not functioning as promised) and being passed around from publisher to publisher saw Too Human take nine years from announcement to release. And a resoundingly mediocre critical response ensured its sequels never saw the light of day.
