7 Weirdest Witcher 3 Enemies (And What They Represent)
1. Ignus Fatuus & Foglets
The Ignus Fatuus of The Witcher 3 is a grotty little creature found in the caves of Velen, goblin-like and decaying in its appearance as it phases in and out with the mists around him. A breed of foglet, these creatures are defined by their ability to move between ghostly and corporeal forms, with fog beckoning their appearance as it thickens around an adventuring Geralt. Ignus Fatuus in particular lives in the bogs as a levelled up version of your average foglet.
And bogs, then, are the resting place of Bolotnik, a swampland supernatural creature that draws people to their deaths in murky, misty waters, much in the same way as foglets drown people in marshes (as detailed in their bestiary entry). Bolotnik is described as a frog-like man with long arms who disguises himself as a stepping stone, so he can slip away from those that tread on him to cause them to drown in the dirty waters.
As for Ignus Fatuus, his name translates to 'foolish fire' in Latin, and is a phenomenon where weary travellers will see lights in the swamp that they assume to be the lit candles of a nearby house, only to follow them to their death in the swamp waters. Foglets, deception, and death by marshes are all intrinsically linked then - with the foglets being an embodiment of the danger in bogs, and the light in their chests (as per their Gwent artwork) being a reference to Ignus Fatuus's wily ways.
