7. Expanded Civil War - Skyrim

Skyrim boasted plenty of interesting quests, but one which was unique to this instalment was the Civil War wreaking havoc across the land. Waged between Ulfric and his Stormcloaks against the Imperial Legion, the bubbling rebellion laid the foundation for the whole landscape.

Hell, it was considered so important that it acts as the hook of the entire introduction. Likewise, throughout the main story you get to know both sides, each with their own pros and cons, and decide which cause to join. Unfortunately, all that boiled down to was a couple of battles, with much of the interesting political implications being pushed to the side entirely. Consequently, after taking over a few castles, your side just... wins.

In a way that wasn't different from the other quests in the game, but still, it felt a little easy considering the supposed scale of the conflict. Originally, however, the Civil War was supposed to be far more dynamic. You could lose battles, which would either force you to go on the offensive or defensive. City sieges would have made an appearance as well, adding larger stakes to fights and connecting them directly with the rest of the world.

Ultimately it was supposed to have a bigger impact on the entire world, rather than be a side story which is barely referenced once it's over.
