8 Amazing Video Games Ruined By ONE Terrible Mechanic
2. Dark Side Mode - No More Heroes
No More Heroes might well be one of the most imperfectly perfect games I've ever played, as while I absolutely adore the setting, boss battles, relentless action, and over the top attitude it lugs around like a pair of weighty testicles, it drops another type of ball incredibly hard in places.
From near empty and almost pointless city streets, to frustrating mission structure, it's a title that draws you in and pushes you away constantly. However none of this was enough to affect my time with, nor adoration for, this title, yet there was one mechanic that absolutely positively sucked.
The Dark Side Mode.
Now for those not in the know, when Travis finishes off an enemy with a death blow, a series of slots will begin to spin in the bottom of the screen. If these match up in a particular order then this would trigger one of five different states, empowering our weeb-warrior to almost Super Saiyan levels.
While sounding very cool in theory, the delivery of this "rage" mechanic left a lot to be desired, as the slots would sometimes line up for some incredible one-hit-kill awesomeness, on the last enemy in the area.
As it was down to RNG, you could sometimes battle through incredibly tough sections only for the game to unlock "Easy Mode" in the last few swings, and nothing will make you hate a mechanic more than when it's this overpowered but you barely get to use it.
