8 Controversies That Have ALREADY Hurt Cyberpunk 2077

2. You Might Be Able To Play As A Trans Or Non-Binary Character

On the opposite end to the social/political spectrum to those up in arms about the fetishistic portrayal of a transwoman comes the revelation you might be able to make your V transgender or non-binary.

Though, again, the majority don’t particularly care, some have described the move as pandering, causing said controversy. You do have to say though if any given player would rather play as cisgender, they’ll definitely be able to; it’s extremely likely the vast majority of players will do that, too.

Whether this means male voices on ostensibly female Vs (or vice versa), or something more complex like mixing up sex characteristics or giving a feminine V a cybernetic bulge of our own remains to be seen.

Though gaming continues to be dominated by straight white male characters, there’s definitely more diversity around these days. With that does come controversy, though most in and around the industry would argue it’s worth it; more demographics means more enjoyment for all and, cynically, more customers.

Celeste’s creator Matt Thorson recently came out as non-binary, and they’ve become an overnight trailblazer. The future looks set to be more inclusive, but there’ll certainly be people upset/angry/offended (check those which apply) on the way.
