8 Crazy Video Game Urban Legends You Need To Hear

1. Luigi Is Dead In Luigi's Mansion

Lara Croft
Nintendo

With its strong supernatural themes, Luigi's Mansion is a shade darker than most Nintendo games, but it's still cutesy, colourful, family fun all round... or is it?

Back when the title was first released for GameCube, eagle-eyed players caused a frenzy online by posting what they claim is evidence that Luigi is actually dead in the game, destined to walk the Mushroom Kingdom as a ghost after committing suicide.

There's a scene where Mario's bro enters a room to answer the phone while lightning flashes, casting an ominous shadow on the wall. In this sequence, the plumber's silhouette resembles that of a hanged man, suspended from the ceiling by his neck.

Some have cited this as evidence that Luigi's Mansion was originally a much darker game which dealt with weighty themes such as suicide and the afterlife, only for these elements to be toned down when it passed through Ninty's censors.

On the other hand, there's a chance the game was never a complete perversion of everything Nintendo stands for, and the hanging Luigi shadow was merely a glitch.
