8 Details That Will Make Resident Evil 7 Truly Terrifying

Capcom's latest entry in their long-standing horror series, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, releases later this month on January 24th.

There's a lot riding on this new release too, after the poor reception to Resident Evil 6 and it's focus on action over horror, alongside those damn quick time events. Not only does Resident Evil 7 have to win back those who fell out of love with the series, but it has to do a good job of bringing in new fans in the process.

To do so, Capcom are taking some creative risks. The game will be the first time a mainline Resident Evil title has been in first person, the last being the spin-off Gun Survivor series in the early 2000s.

Capcom are also scaling the series back by telling a more focused tale set within an ominous mansion that recalls memories of the original, rather than the globe-trotting drama of global Bioterror established in more recent titles.

With the imminent release of Resident Evil 7, I've taken a look at the potential this new entry has to be a glorious return to form for the series, and compiled the best reasons that make me optimistic about the series' new direction.

Here are 8 details that will make Resident Evil 7 truly terrifying...

Patriarch of the Baker family, Jack has featured heavily in pre-release images and footage for Resident Evil 7.

In gameplay videos, as seen above, Jack is an unrelenting force that stalks the player. He's not exactly fast, but his menacing taunts and shouts, as well as the fact that obstacles such as walls, doors, and furniture barely seem to slow him down, means that once he's spotted you, there's going to be a frantic struggle to get away.

Frantic cat-and-mouse gameplay will see us doing all we can to stay out of his reach, or his shovel's range.

Add to this the fact that he seems to be immune to damage (able to take gunshots to the head and laugh it off) and you have an enemy that's both full of hatred and unstoppable.

Not the best situation to find yourself in during a desperate bid for survival.
