8 Failed Video Game Consoles That Had One Incredible Game

6. Neo Geo: King Of Fighters '98

Alien Vs Predator
SNK

Street Fighter II was the game which perfected the versus fighter formula, hence why Capcom has rehashed it so many times over the years, but SNK gave its rival a huge black eye when it launched King Of Fighters '98 for Neo Geo.

The game proved a smash hit in arcade parlours across the world and it arrived on the home console with no concessions, plus the added benefit of not having to feed it pocket change every time you suffered a knockout (not that Neo Geo owners had much spare change after meeting the system's hefty asking price).

Everything about King Of Fighters '98 screamed 'better than Street Fighter'. It was accessible enough to pick up and play, but had a satisfying layer of depth beneath the surface. The character roster was jam-packed with memorable combatants, and the cartoony visuals were gorgeous in their day, and charming in retrospect.

Games like King Of Fighters '98 prove the Neo Geo lived up to its promise of bringing arcade-quality action to the living room, but the system's £399 price tag (the equivalent of over £700 today) meant the majority of kids found Nintendo and Sega machines beneath their Christmas trees in the early 1990s.
