8 Game Overs That Made You Say "WHAT?!"

Well, that de-escalated quickly.

There's nothing that stings more than a video game "Game Over" is there?

Well, outside of realizing how much you've spent on microtransactions once the bikini DLC hit for Dead Or Alive, but much like my wallet having a stroke, the feeling that you weren't quite good enough to emerge victorious really is a sinking feeling.

And that's if the game is playing fair! Too many times have players been one-shotted, glitched to the beyond, or just taken out by a cheap video game boss that didn't abide by the old Queensbury Rules, and as such Game Over screens are pretty commonplace even in this day and age.

That being said, some Game Overs go above and beyond in order to humiliate, shock, and downright annoying players to such an extent that only one word forms on their tongue, like a burning spear bursting forth, leaving us to scream at our monitors and screens "WHAT?!"

So let's take a look at some of these cheeky whippets, shall we?

8. Spongebob Squarepants: Supersponge (PS1)

Goemon's Great Adventure
THQ

If there's one thing that you pretty much expect, nay demand, from a Spongebob Squarepants experience, it's silliness.

No matter what the occasion, the setup of the show is that the central cast are going to have a whacky time and that all will end well no matter how crazy things may get.

Therefore you probably didn't ask for a heavy dose of clinical depression in a Spongebob Squarepants video game. Yet that's unfortunately what you're going to get from the Supersponge title.

Here you're tasked with getting a present for Patrick, but should you fail in your mission you'll be presented with a bleak ending with some truly disturbing imagery.

Patrick will lament that he's alone, and that nobody loves him and that all his friends have forgotten his birthday. It's grim right? Well, it's not as weird as the fact that for some reason he's smiling while telling us this.

That's right, he's reeling off feelings of loneliness while having a chipper smile on his face. It's beyond creepy, and makes for a Game Over that's sure to leave you questioning what the hell you've just seen.
