8 Games That Scare You With Lies

3. "___ Will Remember That" - Telltale's The Walking Dead

One of the most distinctive tropes of Telltale's The Walking Dead franchise is the regular reminder in the top-left corner that a character will remember something you've said or done.

With the series' apparent emphasis on player choice and diverging story paths, the obvious implication is that you just might've done something that'll come back to bite you in the proverbial later on.

If nothing else, these reminders kept us all on our toes and left us uneasy about what the future might hold. Working precisely as intended, then.

Except, it's basically a load of bull given that, bar a few exceptions, characters don't really remember anything you say or do in a significant way.

Telltale built a brand on choose-your-own-adventure stories that largely offer only a gossamer-thin illusion of choice, with just a few very carefully curated branching paths.

Linearity is the order of the day for the most part, and though the games are largely still terrific, these unsettling reminders of the gravity of your choices are really nothing more than hot air.
