Of all modern media derived from Lovecraft's unnerving literary work, we have to be glad that it's a game that is actually worth something. It begins as a somewhat more dynamic version of the newer Amnesia or Penumbra games: through interaction with the world and characters, we are led through a tutorial of sorts, where the game teaches the player how to react in different situations and, later, how to deal with enemies. It's grim and unnerving. From the very beginning it's quite obvious that something seriously wrong is going on in that universe. Atmospherically, the game is just brilliant. The transition from an adventure/sneaker to a "stealth" shooter is smooth, but empowering. It's one of those games where a single bullet can mean the world to the player. , and while weapons empower you, they don't make you a war-god. The balance struck by Dark Corners of the Earth is simply amazing. It's an old school game, mind you, so don't expect to blast through it without getting killed or worse. There is an omnipresent threat of going mad looming constantly over your head. The game forces you to micromanage your wounds and sanity, as well as the more concrete resources such as weapons and ammo. Altough the game hasn't received much in the way of praise, you'll have to trust me that it's well worth the money and time given.
