8 Greatest Video Game Twists (With Zero Build-Up)

7. The Huddle - Inside

Modern Warfare 2 Ghost death
Playdead

Playdead's follow-up to their acclaimed puzzle-platformer Limbo certainly didn't rest on its laurels, culminating in one of the most unexpected final twists of any game, well, ever.

Players spend the game controlling a boy as he navigates an oppressive dystopian world, but right at the end, he reaches a chamber where he comes face to face with The Huddle - a revolting mass of flesh composed of dozens of people.

After the boy frees the Huddle from its restraints, he's pulled into the mass, becoming part of the blob, at which point players are then given control of it.

You're then compelled to stage a violent escape, rampaging through the lab and killing any scientists who get in your way, before breaking through a wall, rolling down a hill, and finally coming to a stop as you reach the coastline. The End.

This was a decidedly extra way to end a game that, up to this point, seemed positively subtle and restrained.

Not a single damn soul expected to meet a flesh-blob monster, let alone become one with the mass moments before the credits roll.

It may have strong "we didn't know how to end the game" vibes, and yet, it's still totally amazing. After all, a near-decade later fans are still talking about it.
