8 Heroic Video Game Characters Who Didn't Actually Affect The Plot

3. You (No Man's Sky)

No Mans Sky
Hello Games

Easily one of the most disappointing games of all time, No Man's Sky's crimes ranged from repetitive planet designs to naff combat, being mis-marketed to outright having many of its features lied about before launch.

One of the most egregious - for those who still stuck around and played it through to completion - came from the latter, and the idea that at the heart of the galaxy, would be something truly special. After all, why were you - the player - journeying anywhere at all? No Man's Sky introduces two characters named Nada and Polo who are essentially looking into the idea of the universe as we know it being a simulation, yet reaching the centre of the galaxy confirms this in the worst possible way.

Upon interacting with the centre on the Galaxy Map, you're treated to... a slowly speeding up zoom out of every planet you landed on to get there. The camera zooms out, and out, and out, with millions more planets whizzing past, until you're back where you began, literally hundreds of hours ago.

No Man's Sky then intones that you should do it all again, as nothing - from the plants you discovered to the structures you built, languages you learned or anything in between - mattered one bit.
