Consumer-gouging add-ons are an annoyance that much of the industry refuses to grow out of, and it doesn't help that racing games are exceptionally well-poised to wallow in the profits. Games like Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Destiny have DLC written all over them, to be sure, but you can bet it will be much more difficult to put out than slapping a steep tag on a batch of vehicle models. It's one thing to expand a world with new characters and settings, but another entirely to lengthen an already titanic roster with a few more cars, yet the two are often costing consumers the same. That's not to say Forza and The Crew and others shouldn't receive additional cars post-release, mind. However, paltry packs of cosmetic options and handfuls of cars aren't worth the current price of admission. The concept of free DLC also deserves a turn in the spotlight. Hell, a free car or track a week could be quite the marketing hook, even.
A freelance games writer, you say? Typically battling his current RPG addiction and ceaseless perfectionism? A fan of horror but too big a sissy to play for more than a couple of hours? Spends far too much time on JRPGs and gets way too angry with card games?
Well that doesn't sound anything like me.
