8 Insane Video Game Events Hardly ANYONE Saw
3. The End - The Matrix Online
Ever wondered what it must be like to be "unplugged" in The Matrix?
Well, all those who were there for the very end of The Matrix Online got to see entire city blocks full of people get disconnected and killed en masse, as Monolith Productions closed their servers for good.
That final day was Friday the 31st of July, 2009, but the game had one hell of a fascinating innings for four years prior.
Carrying on where the movies left off - because the whole deal with The Matrix was that everything was canon, across all media - Matrix Online had Morpheus and his crew looking for Neo's body.
Alongside there were many factions borne out of the prior war between the humans and machines, and players were routinely grouped together in mass combat to fight for their side.
Come the end though, everyone was on the same page. All fans knew was that the servers would be going offline on that date, and nothing else.
As players stood together and embraced the end, Monolith triggered a series of lightning bolt animations to see everyone off in style. It got a little... macabre with many characters' screaming in agony, but you can't beat a system message telling everyone to "Wake up!", before it was all over.
