8 Major Worries For The Nintendo Switch In 2018
6. The Heavy Reliance On Established IPs Continues
Established, storied IPs are essential to the success of any console. They form the backbone of a platform's appeal and guarantee a recurring audience year after year. One need only cast an eye over Pokémon's performance on Nintendo's handhelds for an example of that.
However strong the Big N's collection of mascots is, though, relying on Link, Mario, Samus, Kirby, Yoshi and the rest of the gang stifles creativity going forward. Part of the reason why Microsoft is floundering is due to its inability or reluctance to establish a new franchise like Sony has with the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn and we'd hate to see Nintendo suffer a similar fate.
Mainline Mario, Zelda and Metroid titles? Those things take time to make, Nintendo would be doing itself (and Switch owners) a favour by filling the inevitable interval between each with new ideas from the minds of its creatives.
Time to call Miyamoto.
