4. Free To Play Football With Microtransactions - EFootball
Ok so in principle, eFootball should have been an absolute belter of a title as not only was this a brand new football game from the PES lineage but was also approaching the genre from a pretty interesting angle. And when I say interesting I mean "What the Fuuu-"
For you see Konami, in yet another of their "let's reinvent the wheel with a poisonous cube" moves, decided to not spend the time and effort creating a true rival to the FIFA experience with fresh and interesting gameplay mechanics, but instead focused on how to turn the entire sport of football into a microtransaction buffet making the act of purchasing a key mechanic of their game.
We need not go over how hilarious it was to see pre-orders for the game come with a caveat that all those early bird bonuses you were buying wouldn't even be in the game until months after release, but we most definitely need to look at the studded boot dropkick to the shins that was the lack of any "game" to play.
eFootball arrived on the scene missing every single mode that PES was famous for, meaning that those who picked up the game on launch were given nothing to bite down on apart from their controllers in frustration. The dev team was too busy figuring out what to sell back to their fanbase that it didn't think to give them anything to actually play.
This was less an own goal and more a Sunday league dad slicing the ball into a car park and knocking out an OAP trying to enjoy a mushy pea lunch.
