5. Returnal
In many ways, Returnal is pretty similar to previously discussed Control in the fact that it approaches the concept of telling a cohesive and straightforward narrative like it's a scavenger hunt and that all the pieces have to be hidden in the four corners of the world.
On paper, if you broke down the story beats, I'm sure you could make sense of Returnal's plot, but when you're experiencing these events first hand alongside the outstanding sci-fi shooter action you'll not be able to make head nor tails of it.
It's so utterly jarring to be facing down a hellspawn one minute, and then approaching a watery lake with a car in it the other, and things only get more confusing once you unlock the secret ending which adds yet more depth and complexity to the plot.
Thus is becomes a game of two halves, one side being an expression of raw emotional turmoil and the other a rock-hard twitch shooter that is not afraid to kick your ass and break your brain in equal measure.
