The 2001, AA battery-powered, 32-bit handheld system was a huge success for Nintendo, with sales of over 81 million units worldwide. On the market at the same time as the Gamecube - even sharing a common colour scheme on launch - the GBA was a powerful little machine for its time.

The OG model did have one huge flaw, however, with the lack of a back-lit screen forcing players into living room corners or specific seats on the bus if they actually wanted to see what was going on in-game.

Thankfully, the SP and Micro revisions corrected this error in later years, and are by far the superior GBA models.

Depending on whether you go for the original GBA or SP model, you will pay between £20-£50 today, with the much rarer Micro likely to set you back £70+.

Whilst this may seem a little high for a 19 year old handheld system, the library of games the GBA boasts more than makes up for this, with modern day prices for GBA games ridiculously low.

Many of the best and most beloved gaming franchises of all time are represented here, with some instant classics and absolute smash hits among them, many of which can be picked up cheap online.

To name a random few: Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Golden Sun, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green, Metroid Fusion, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Doom, and Final Fantasy VI, not to mention countless games based in the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, DC Comics, and Harry Potter universes.

This list may refer to retro systems to play in 2020, but the the GBA is an absolute must-buy regardless of the year.
