6. Sega Dreamcast

Sega’s final home console release, the Dreamcast, was way ahead of its time, and ultimately suffered under the weight of its own ambitions.

Selling just over 9 million units from its late 1999 release, the Dreamcast was crushed by the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube, marking the end of Sega’s tenure as a console maker.

Despite its built in modem and focus on online play before online play was really a thing, the Dreamcast never fully justified its place alongside its peers, and can be picked up today for around £50-£60.

The games, however, still stand up to scrutiny, and the Dreamcast was home to some absolute classics.

Featuring such games as the appropriately titled Crazy Taxi, the ultra-stylised Jet Set Radio, and the manic puzzler Chu Chu Rocket, the Dreamcast definitely tried to innovate.

Available for around £12-£15 online and in specialist stores, the Dreamcast also boasted more recognisable franchises with titles like the impeccable Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure 2, the originally exclusive Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and the still awesome Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

With the Dreamcast’s Visual Memory Unit - the device slotted into the controller to allow saves and additional content - available for less than a fiver, and four controller ports for some frantic couch co op sessions, the oft-overlooked and much-derided Dreamcast is an absolute hidden gem for retro gaming in 2020.
