Three things are certain in first-person shooters: any level set inside a living alien spaceship will be dreadful, barrels will always explode if you so much as look at them funny, and someone, somewhere will have tried to recreate their family home as a hi-tech death zone that rivals The Hunger Games. It€™s easy to see why this idea pops up over and over again €“ if you€™re new to map making, you€™re probably still getting to grips with the tools and so you€™ll be spending time thinking about how to build, not what to build. Picking something you know intimately seems like a smart choice, especially when you can go and double-check the details (or even make textures) just by wandering down to the kitchen with a camera. As a learning exercise, there€™s nothing wrong with recreating the familiar. As somewhere to actually have a firefight, your house is going to be terrible. Despite their portrayal on TV, surprisingly few architects are giggling, asylum-bound maniacs who design homes with an ornamental lava pit and plenty of chest-high walls for cover. The novelty of blowing up your garden shed will help the map seem fun to you €“ to the rest of us, your house is a bunch of dead-ends with little breathing room and terrible respawn points.
