8 Spooky Gaming Urban Legends That Will Give You Nightmares

5. Herobrine The Minecraft Ghost

'Herobrine' himself Minecraft is one of the most celebrated indie sandbox games of the moment. And if the 'creepers' weren't unsettling enough, legend has it the cubed landscape is haunted. In August 2010 a thread was posted on the Minecraft forums featuring a foggy, slightly unclear photo screen shot of a Minecraft game accompanied by a story from the player. The post explained there was a strange presence in his Minecraft world, as if someone else was there. This was accompanied by a live gaming stream known as 'Brocraft' (known now as 'ghost in the stream') which appeared on the same date as the post, and was the first known sighting of Herobrine. This was followed by another stream featuring a staged game crash ending with the screen filled with Herobrines face with actual human eyes. Both videos have been deleted and said to be hoaxes. What makes this even more unsettling is the rumour that Herobine is a ghost haunting the game, and more specifically, that the ghost of the game's creator, Notch. He has tweeted he had a brother who passed away, adding fuel to the fire but since denied it. What re-enforces this urban legend is the fact a lot of Minecraft updates specify they have 'removed Herobine' in the description. This has been shrugged off as a joke but some swear he is still spotted in user's Minecraft worlds. Unfortunately any evidence of this is extremely hard to find, which is spooky in itself.
