In Dark Souls 3, one of the most memorable NPC encounters is that of Horace and Anri of Astora. Anri is incredibly important, and is involved in one of the game's endings. Horace, on the other hand, is a silent protector of Anri. Throughout the game the player encounters both NPCS on multiple occasions, until the Catacombs of Carthus when the two become separated. Anri appears to slightly lose her mind at this point, seeming disorientated and disheartened by the loss of Horace.

Horace is later found at the Smouldering Lake below Carthus, having hollowed. Many players have wondered how exactly the two are separated, given how loyally Horace tails Anri and their obviousness closeness. Yet it's possible the answer is right there in the open.

During dialogue, Anri mentions that a trap splits them up. If you pay attention near the slope that triggers the first skeleton ball trap, at the bottom of the path there's a gate which the ball crashes into. Next to that gate is a switch with a snapped handle - a unique model found nowhere else in the game.

If Anri and Horace triggered the trap, Anri would have made it through the gate, but Horace's huge equipment load would have made it so he couldn't run. Anri likely made it through the gate and triggered it to close, causing the ball to smash into the switch and destroy it, separating the two.
