8 Utterly Mind-Blowing Dark Souls Trilogy Fan Theories

3. Mimics Started Out As Thieves From Oolacile

Mimics are up there amongst Dark Souls most memorable enemies, but few people actually stop to consider what they really are.

Treasure chests with massive tongues and long, gangly limbs... surely they're just supposed to be unsettling, right?

Well, Dark Souls wouldn't be Dark Souls if there wasn't the potential for things to get a little deeper. Remember those humanoid enemies in Oolacile, which you can visit during the Artorias Of The Abyss DLC? Well, take a look at one side by side with a mimic – their bodies are alarmingly similar. Both have long, thin limbs and they share that striking arm position, elbows pointed in the air as if broken. According to the Symbol Of Avarice item (basically a Mimic the player wears on their head) it marks a symbol of shame worn by a long lost clan, who were obsessed with greed.

Connecting these things is the sorcery Chameleon, which allows players to transform into objects so they can blend into the environment. A pretty useful spell for someone obsessed with greed, right? Just change into a treasure chest and wait for people to deposit valuable stuff. Oh, and where was the spell developed? Oolacile. The true kicker is that there is even a secret animation between a mob from Oolacile and a mimic chest in Oolacile Township. The mob wanders up to the mimic then points and laughs at it, as if in total recognition.
