DmC: Devil May Cry, the Ninja Theory-developed reboot of Capcom's demon-slaying action franchise, was met with mixed reactions from the fanbase. Some fans derided the new Dante for being too different, while others enjoyed the new, provocative take on the series. Even Capcom expressed their admiration for the game, but sales numbers for the reboot were below expectations.

The reboot had its supporters, but fans were still left wondering about DMC4 and a continuation of the old canon. DMC's place in the character action genre was beginning to shrink, as more and more developers had tried their hand at it. Fans began to worry that the reboot's unimpressive sales numbers had killed the franchise, but Capcom had other ideas.

They finally unveiled Devil May Cry 5 at E3 2018, which left the reboot continuity behind and was positioned as a direct sequel to DMC4. While some fans lamented the loss of the reboot timeline, it was clear that DMC5 was going to be something special. It looked ridiculously slick, utilizing Capcom's powerful new RE Engine to power Dante and Nero's new story.

DMC5 was met with universal critical acclaim, while also overtaking DmC's sales within weeks of launch and even snagged Best Action Game at the 2019 Game Awards. It was exactly what the franchise needed; a back-to-basics masterclass in the action genre.
