8 Video Game Heroes Who Doomed THEMSELVES

5. Oersted - Live A Live

Shadow Of The Colossus Wander
Square Enix

Oersted is one of Live A Live's many playable characters and the one who ended up not merely sealing his own fate but straight-up condemning himself to all-encompassing villainy.

Oersted is a knight who battles his pal Streibough for the hand of Princess Alethea of Lucrece, but after Oersted wins, Alethea is kidnapped by the malevolent Lord of Dark.

And so, Oersted and Streibough join forces to rescue her, defeating the Lord of Dark but at the cost of Streibough's life - or so Oersted thinks.

Back at Lucrece Castle, Oersted is then tricked into killing the region's king, believing him to be a monster, resulting in Oersted being cast out by the people of Lucrece.

More to the point, it turns out that the whole ruse was concocted by Streibough, who was jealous of Oersted winning Alethea's hand and so faked his own death while setting Oersted up to kill the king.

Oersted then kills his former friend, but when he finally rescues Alethea, she blames him for Streibough's actions and commits suicide.

This leaves Oersted in such a state of despair that he becomes the real Lord of Dark, Odio - the game's ultimate antagonist and a literal, physical manifestation of hate.

Though Live A Live has several endings, none of them turn out well for Oersted, and most of them leave him dead. While he was certainly manipulated into an epic heel turn by his friend, the moment he fought to win the princess as a prize, he'd already lost.
