8 Video Game Heroes Who Doomed THEMSELVES

2. Joel - The Last Of Us

Shadow Of The Colossus Wander
Naughty Dog

Though The Last of Us' protagonist Joel manages to survive for almost five years after the events of the first game, his concluding violent act nevertheless sealed his fate, setting him on a chartered course towards the Grim Reaper.

The game of course ends with Joel refusing to let the Fireflies perform surgery on Ellie in the pursuit of a cure - surgery which has no guarantee of producing one, but will 100% result in Ellie's death.

In order to secure his and Ellie's exit from the hospital, Joel goes all guns blazing - or rather, blades. When the head surgeon brandishes a scalpel to try and stop Joel leaving with Ellie, Joel responds by stabbing him in the neck, killing him instantly.

And while Joel subsequently manages to escape the hospital with Ellie, albeit with a pile of bodies in his wake, it's an act which leaves his days firmly numbered.

The surgeon's young daughter, Abby, swears revenge on Joel for killing her father, and that she finally gets years later in The Last of Us Part II, when she captures Joel and beats him to death with a golf club - in front of Ellie, no less.

Granted, you can argue that Joel would've probably died much sooner if he simply left Ellie to die in the hospital and confined himself to a lonely, despair-filled existence, but by killing Abby's dad, he painted a big, bright target on his back.
