8 Video Game Moments That Will Be Mind-Blowing With The Oculus Rift
6. Portals Changing Perspective In Prey
When thinking about 2006's Prey, only three things spring to mind; its story involves Native American mysticism, the game cleverly uses some portal mechanics and its not getting a sequel. Admittedly, that's the type of thing that will happen when people don't play the game beyond the demo but that demo had one quite astounding moment that has to be seen to be believed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWKwr5FXJPw To summarise, the player comes across a small orb, about the same size as a basketball, suspended in a glass jar. The player enters a portal next to the orb and suddenly finds themselves walking on its surface as if its a small moon and theyve been reduced to the size of an ant. Even more impressively, they can now peer outside at the room they just exited as an enemy usually around six feet tall but now the equivalent of Godzilla to the players tiny body charges through the doors and looks down at the player stood atop the orb. Its a very impressive display of how perspective can be used to change the players view on the world and puts into perspective the scenarios gamers could find themselves in if developers wanted to do something similar for a virtual reality headset. It's already possible to play Portal using an Oculus Rift and for the pure mind-bending joy of travelling through portals, it's the better option. However, when it comes to the surreal feeling of being shrunk down to a couple of inches in height with a single step, there's nothing like Prey.
