8 Video Game Sequels That Changed EVERYTHING
1. Dark Souls 2: Scholar Of The First Sin
Dark Souls 2 is a fascinating bastard, isn't it? Experiencing something of a tumultuous development with the original creative lead Miyazaki stepping aside, the much-hyped sequel arrived on the scene with a colossal impact but was slowly picked apart by fans over the years as they questioned what the intent of the game actually was.
For many, it was a sequel that tried way too hard to emulate the original, focusing on the "death is around every corner" aspect over the thrill of making it through conflicts by the skin of your teeth. It was a sequel that held great ideas but seemed plagued by an overabundance of mechanics that seemed purpose-designed to be "unfair" rather than "challenging"
Therefore it was quite surprising when this sequel itself got a sequel of sorts in "Scholar Of The First Sin" which was effectively a do-over for Dark Souls 2, and boy howdy did it changed EVERYTHING.
From enemy placement, item drop rates, and even environmental features, through to remixed boss patterns and an increase in online mode player caps to six, the game felt so different that even experienced Dark Souls 2 fans were taken aback.
The challenge presented here is insane and one can't help but think the devs reflected on their own sins and doled out even more to the player.
