8 Video Game Trilogies That Went From Bad To GREAT

5. Killzone

Guerrilla Games' Killzone was handicapped from the outset due to the games media hyping it up as a "Halo killer" and next king of the FPS genre.

Ultimately Killzone fell far short of the excitement, due to gunplay that felt bad even at the time, as well as the game's abundance of bugs, poor AI, clunky controls, and underwhelming visuals. Stood next to Halo, the generic sci-fi shooter was a total nothingburger.

Guerrilla clearly took the criticism to heart, though, and returned with Killzone 2 in 2009 which positively mopped the floor with its predecessor, owing to its satisfying gunplay, beefed-up visuals, thick atmosphere, and superb multiplayer suite.

And then came Killzone 3, which while not exceeding the thrills of its predecessor ably followed its lead, while tightening up the previous game's somewhat divisive control scheme.

Though Killzone ended up being a surprisingly short-lived franchise - wrapping up with 2013's not-bad fourth mainline game. Killzone: Shadow Fall - the original trilogy morphed from its disappointingly bland origins into a rare shooter of the period with real weight and physicality.
