8 Video Games Built To Kill The Competition (That WON)
7. Tekken
When the Tekken franchise first launched for arcades in 1994, the 3D fighting game scene was pretty healthy, with Namco's brawler facing competition from the Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, and Soulcalibur series in particular.
But in the years that followed, these three franchises all floundered - the last proper Virtua Fighter game came out in 2006, Dead or Alive lost much of its cultural impact, and Soulcalibur VI's sales were less than stellar.
Today, none of these series have anywhere close to the mindshare and general player appeal that Tekken does. As for why? Tekken's more accessible, broad-skewing gameplay and memorable cast of fighters probably clinches it.
While you might imagine Tekken devs being happy about their utter supremacy of the genre, that's not quite true - Tekken 8 director Kohei Ikeda recently said, "I wish that there were other rivals out there to push our limits, have someone to really make you motivated to push yourself even more."
