8 Video Games That Redefined The Horror Genre

6. Slender Man

Agony Game
Blue Isle Studios

Slenderman's tension and creepiness scared the internet out of its skin, resulting in huge success for the game.

Slenderman was an instant sensation, the creepy eponymous villain giving the entire internet the heebie jeebies at once. His long, out of proportion arms and hands emerge at a randomly generated wrong turn, unexpectedly creeping and offering jump scares galore.

The worst thing about Slenderman, however, is not his weird fingers or his unexpected appearances, it is the fact that he doesn't even want anything. He's just there. And that makes him creepier than any reason he could have for stalking the player.

It is a testament to the game that Slenderman has now transcended gaming culture and into the world of films, ready to scare brand new audiences as well as those who played the game and wish to subject themselves to it all over again.

While Slenderman has had a surprisingly small impact on the horror genre as a whole, perhaps the new film will change that, and more films or games of this style will start popping up where you least expect them.
