8 Video Games That Reward You For NOT Levelling Up

I absolutely adore Disco Elysium.

Never has playing as such a monstrous loser been so absolutely brilliant, and guiding our drunk, aggressive and belligerent Harry around a strange totalitarian world looking for clues is at once an utter chore designed to grind the very edges of your soul as you desperately seek simple solutions to simple problems and a unique deep dive down the rabbit hole of morality.

It also rewards you for being absolutely terrible at your job.

Throughout the game, you're shown a multitude of different aspects of your psyche that you can "level up", and while it might make sense on paper to pour points into strength, resilience or empathy, over levelling them will actually be detrimental to your character as these inner voices will become so loud that they override your own input as a player, and you'll begin to act out in bizarre ways.

Better then, to not level up, as not only will you avoid a fair few outbursts, but also you'll come to learn Disco Elysiums real message. It's ok to fail.

Failure in this game often results in the most comical moments, the most outlandish claims, and better yet, actually seeks to humanise your character to the point where people are more willing to talk to you and even offer more insight than they would by simply passing the check!

The important thing is that you try. That's the real key.
