8 Video Games That Tragically Wasted Their Genius Premise

6. Brink

First-person shooters have become the biggest genre in the video game industry due to their basic gun-action premise. Unfortunately, this has also been the genre's biggest downfall. Now it's required for developers to think outside the box when approaching the genre and Splash Damage seemed to be adhering to this requirement with their title, Brink. Or so we thought. Indeed, Brink had high hopes of being a revolutionary team-based shooter thanks to two unique novelties. Firstly, its campaign would combined single-player populated with bots and multiplayer seamlessly through a drop in/drop out online mechanic. And secondly, its patented S.M.A.R.T. system would allow players to manoeuvre across the map while avoiding obstacles parkour-style with just the press of a button. Both features made Brink seem magical to those who were anticipating it. So what went wrong? Firstly, the campaign's bots had apparently skipped school as they couldn't figure out how to properly support the player or even themselves without tumbling around obstacles that were sticking out in front of them. As for the S.M.A.R.T. system, if we give it it's due, it was fairly reliable. However, for such a barnstorming new innovation, 'fairly' doesn't cut it €“ it would sometimes struggle with negotiating the various ledges, balconies or walls throughout the maps, leaving your uncoordinated avatar humping a wall while enemies cut him to ribbons. While Brink has improved somewhat with patches, these initial problems were all that were needed to sabotage its premise.
