8 Video Games Where Everyone Loses

4. The 7th Saga

Everyone Dies Thumb
Square Enix

Groundbreaking for its time, Enix’s The 7th Saga contained an appropriate seven different character storylines, intertwining across a grand quest to gather seven runes and prevent the resurrection of the evil entity Gorsia.

Set on this quest by the 100 year old Lemele, in a mid game twist it is revealed that Gorsia had killed Lemele and had been masquerading as him all along. Having foreseen his death, Gorsia travelled from 5000 years in the past to reclaim his lost power from the runes and rule supreme. With all seven runes in his possession, Gorsia regains his lost power and zaps the player back to his time.

If your head’s already starting to spin then you’d better have a lie down for this next bit, as Gorsia decides to finish what he started and travel back to confront the player in his own time. This, unsurprisingly, turns out to be a stupid idea as the player now has access to the un-destroyed seven runes. Sure enough, Gorsia is defeated but manages to strike one last fatal blow on the player in his death throes. 4900 years later, the player is resurrected and given the name…Lemele.

Yup, that’s right. In the last twist of a basically spiralized story, it turns out the whole thing is one massive time-loop, with the player and Gorsia doomed to repeat this cycle of death and resurrection for all eternity. Wonderful.
