8 Video Games Where The True Ending Is The Bad Ending
5. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I know I've said it a thousand times before, but here's another shout-out for those in the back:
I LOVE THE XCOM FRANCHISE.
And one thing I adore even more than the brutally challenging gameplay and rewarding strategic micro-management is that the devs aren't shy when it comes to messing with fans in the best ways possible.
Take for example, how the team decided on the narrative threads for smash hit sequel XCOM 2, as here instead of telling the tale of humanity on the brink of survival, this time around humanity had already fallen. Hard.
This decision was made thanks to game data gathered from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which showcased a pitiful amount of players had actually won the war against the aliens.
So the team figuratively must have looked at each other, shrugged, and then said "Fine then, here's the world you couldn't be bothered to save. ENJOY!" and forged ahead by setting XCOM 2 in the worst ending timeline.
Here humanity were bootlickers to the alien races who'd claimed our planet as their own and in a way, Firaxis were pointing and nudging this scenario while saying "See that, XCOM players? That's you, that is."
