8 Ways Call Of Duty Can Screw Up By Returning To Its Roots

2. ...Or Not Going Far Enough

That lighthearted Guardians of the Galaxy-style tone is so in season for shooters right now. Overwatch is a technicolour wet dream. Battlefield 1’s campaign was pretty easy-going for a war that killed 17 million.

Even the ‘realistic’ Ghost Recon Wildlands has a colourful lilt about it. Don’t be tempted by a Wolfenstein-like alternate reality either. Assuming we’re sticking with gritty, action-packed real-world wars, which one do you pick?

Modern-day war is pretty much the same now as it was when Modern Warfare first came out. A sandy location in the Middle East, populated by demagogues, freedom fighters and fundamentalists. And man, dirt-brown shooters got real old last gen, so we really don’t want to see it return any time soon.

And besides, we’ve already got the remastered COD4 for that.

Black Ops briefly covered Vietnam, and that's far enough back to feel 'vintage' so chalk that up asa possible. The Cold War has massive potential, but was kinda notable for the whole ‘no actual warzones’ things, all espionage and assassinations in hotel rooms; no opportunities for crumbling bridges and fiery explosions there. Unless Chernobyl wasn’t an accident…
