Multiplayer vehicular combat game War Thunder has received strong acclaim for its refined air, land, and sea combat, though there's one major aspect that sticks out to flight enthusiasts - the uncommon nuance to the game's mouse aim controls for planes.

If you wondered why most modern games featuring aircraft primarily require PC players to use their keyboard or a controller, it's because back in 2012 War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment filed a patent for their uniquely refined mouse aim mechanics and aircraft simulation model.

The implementation of mouse aim required the game's flight system to understand the "analytical aspects of aircraft behavior" in a more complex way, which in the developer's own words is one of the reasons the game is so popular.

When a Redditor asked why other games haven't copied War Thunder's innovative mouse aim system, Gaijin founder Anton Yudintsev replied, "Well, we invented it. It is not as simple as it looks, as implementing it requires predictor (either empirical or simulated)."

The current filing won't expire until 2033, so Gaijin's clearly set for a good while.
