Supermassive Games have proven themselves to be masters of horror storytelling once again with their recent hit The Quarry, but if we’re talking about the nastiest things you can uncover then their original must-play Until Dawn has it beat.

I have to go ahead and spoil a bit of the ending here to tell you about this one so if you don’t want to hear it then skip ahead and I’ll have more awful things to tell you about over at number two.

This one classifies as a secret because it’s entirely missable if you walk the wrong way, though I’m breaking my own rule by saying you won’t want to find i,t because it serves as an important piece of the puzzle that fleshes out the narrative.

It is, however, so horrible that once you discover it, you might have wished you hadn’t so I think we’re good to go with this one as an inclusion.

At the beginning of the game sisters Hannah and Beth tumble down a mine and it appears they both die from the impact. In a chilling late game reveal you discover that Hannah actually survived with a broken leg. Though she initially buried her sister, thirty days into being trapped with no sign of rescue Hannah resolved to dig her up and eat her corpse in order to survive.

As if that isn’t bad enough this is a game where cannibalism turns you into a beast called a Wendigo so Hannah then undergoes this transformation.

There are other hints that this is what’s befallen the two earlier in the game and you can work it out for yourself, but actually reading Hannah’s account through her diary is as sickening as it is revealing.
