9 Dumb Coincidences In Video Games You Just Ignored

6. The Emperor's Escape Route - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

You could say the Emperor somewhat negates the coincidental nature of the encounter by chalking it up to destiny and fate, but they are largely the same as coincidence. And what a coincidence it is. Of all the rooms in the entire palace that are both nearer to him and more suited for a quick getaway, his escape route is through the prison.

And through your cell no doubt.

While it’s forgivable because it allows us the opportunity to explore Cyrodil, the more you think about it, the more and more ludicrous it sounds. The prison on the outskirts of the city, meaning that the Emperor would have to traipse through the entire city whilst being hunted by assassins. The route leads through the sewers – of which there are several viable entrances into them - along the path from palace to prison.

Also, having an entire cell off limits completely ruins the secrecy of the escape route, considering that all prison personnel would need briefed on why not to use said cell. You could have it hidden anywhere... but it must be in your cell for the game to happen.

Lastly, it just so happens that the prison guards messed up and put the player character (and hero of the story) in the one cell that could set him on his journey, despite there being other available cells? How convenient...

I like video games, writing and writing about video games. Expect sarcasm and the dry wit of a Brit. And the occasional rant of a unhappy Scot. You know... the usual.
