9 Dumb Coincidences In Video Games You Just Ignored

4. Someone, Somewhere, Has Marked Everywhere You Can Climb - Tomb Raider, Far Cry, DOOM Etc.

Tomb Raider
Crystal Dynamics

This coincidence is apparent across a multitude of games and franchises, yet there is no other example more poignant than that of the 2013's Tomb Raider reboot. In order to clearly mark progression and make it clear that the path the player is following is the correct one, Crystal Dynamics saw fit to paint every single climbable ledge with striking white paint, regardless of how much sense that made.

It's a simple coincidence that they are all painted with the same style, and it's a coincidence that doesn't really fit. It seems to imply that one of the murderous psychopaths on the island took the time to pre-cognitively slap paint on every ledge across the entire island.

More of a hand-holdy game design choice than anything else, other games have managed to make climbable ledges work through subtler hints that work within the world. Mirror's Edge built its entire visual style around it, but Tomb Raider and many others have their critical paths built on unbelievable coincidence.

I like video games, writing and writing about video games. Expect sarcasm and the dry wit of a Brit. And the occasional rant of a unhappy Scot. You know... the usual.
