9 Heart-Breaking Gaming Moments When You Realised You Were The Bad Guy
9. Silent Hill 2 - Learning About Mary
Needless to say, Silent Hill 2 is a decidedly scary game with some pretty disturbing connotations being drawn as the storyline progresses. There is, however, no way of surpassing the final twist of the story the fact our protagonist murdered his own wife, thus locking himself on a path towards our favourite foggy rural town.
As he finds his wife's projection, Maria, brought to life by whatever's going on with Silent Hill, James starts figuring things out. With her continuous torture at the hands of Pyramid Heads and her last death, everything clears up. Through Maria, James realises that everything he finds in the God-forsaken city is born of his own mind. This leads to his final acceptance of what he's done as he faces the final boss of the game. Be it denial or some sort of amnesia, James is seemingly unaware of his previous actions, and the entirety of Silent Hill's monsters and events serve as a metaphor for his own psyche.
There is no canonical ending to the story, with our only lead for James being that he mysteriously disappeared after visiting Silent Hill. What really happened seems to be left for interpretation.
